Artichoke’s Heart (Suzanne Supplee)

Rosemary Goode is smart and funny and loyal and the best eyebrow waxer in Spring Hill, Tennessee. But only one thing seems to matter to anyone, including Rosemary: her weight. And when your mom runs the most successful (and gossipy) beauty shop in town, it can be hard to keep a low profile. Rosemary resolves to lose the weight, but her journey turns out to be about everything but the scale. Her life-changing, waist-shrinking year is captured with brutal honesty and humor, topped with an extra large helping of Southern charm.

  1. I really enjoyed the narrator's perspective. It humanized obesity and zeroed in on human compulsion. It would be a great read for the school's diversity cohort because it addresses a "blind" bias against overweight people.

  2. Though I liked the book, it was a bit easy for her to lose weight in a not healthy way. I would have liked to hear her talk about the healthy food choices more. She did get to that at the end, but the weightloss shakes concerned me a bit. Maybe I'm just over sensitive!

  3. I just started reading the book, but I want to participate in the discussion. The book is easy to read, funny, and ocasionally sad. I am at the point where Mother is diagnosed with cancer. I haven't read about our girl loosing pounds on a permanent basis, but she is getting there - she's got a strong opinion about things, and a strong will (which she will need in order to change her life style).
